Kek Lok Si Temple

Last weekend we decided that after weeks of staring out the window at a very impressive structure across the valley, that we would take a trip over to the Kek Lok Si temple. Apparently we missed the impressive light show at the temple that happens around Chinese New Year by a few days, but the temple is quite impressive during the day as well.

We arrived at the same time as the rain storm you can see behind the temple. The downpour was impressive and did a wonderful job of chasing away the other tourists and making everything shiny and clean for us.

This was as close as we could get to the Buddha statue. It's huge!

One of the things I was excited about was the view from the temple. Since it sits on the side of a mountain, it has a beautiful view of Penang. If you look at the tall high-rise structures along the horizon you can see our building - 4th from the left, just right of the crane.

Emily wasn't too impressed with the Buddha, the view, or the temple (as you can see here).

But the little tigress loved all of the Chinese Zodiac statues that were scattered around the temple grounds. Here she is riding (and being) a tiger, and kissing a monkey.

After about an hour on the grounds we noticed that another storm was approaching as well as Emily's nap time, so we packed up and headed home.

I would like to go back and spend a little more time there walking the grounds and visiting the various buildings. The temple is huge and will it require a little more time to take it all in. Besides, the best Laksa on the island (so I'm told) is in a little stand at the base of the temple. We didn't get a chance to stop due to the two impending storms so a return trip is definitely on the agenda.

Emily is the cutest regardless of her pose, but "kissing monkey" pic is out of this world. I wonder who she learned from how to be a flirt? :)
